Wordful Wednesday - Humming Bird Friends...

The long awaited humming bird photos...

Our feeder has been Grand Central Station lately - or at least for the past month and a half. And since all the neighbors have feeders hanging off their back fences like us, it has become Hummingbird Lane!

Morning feeding...

Evening feeding...

For two weeks we had one male who dominated the feeder and only allowed 1 or 2 other females access. During this time the feeder went from needing to be filled every other day to a filling every 5 - 6 days. He would just camp out on the fence and attack anyone intruding on his feeder.

He would perch all day to ensure only those deemed "worthy" used the feeder.

Ariel "bird fighting" - experienced advice - don't get in the way!

In the past two days he has disappeared and a new hummer has taken over and is much more liberal with who she lets use the feeder. And we are back to filling every other day. I'm not sure what happened to him but he may have finally met his match or moved onto dominating another feeder.

Our new dominant hummer...

And last, but certainly not least, my favorite bird watching companion...

How can you tell the difference between males and females? Are the males more colorful?

Great pictures! I havent seen a hummingbird in years. I know they are all over in the mountains, but here is the city, it's very rare to see them.

In regards to Angie's question about telling females from males - I looked up photos of the hummers. But the male of this species has the dark head. That's how I could tell.

I love watching the hummingbirds. We put a feeder up about a week ago and attendance is light but a few times a day, we spot one.

My mom does the humming bird feeders and always has several.

I thought the dominate male part was pretty funny. So what did you do to get in the way? LOL....

Your photos come out wonderfully!!! Love them! I'm very impressed! And the ones we have are very territorial ... I've never seen them eat at the same time EVER! That is why we have 3 different feeders ... so everyone can have a chance and they stop fighting!

We are big bird watchers too but don't have any feeders up. At Deaglan's grandparent's home, we see hummingbirds but not as many as you guys!
